Thanos
Thanos, created by Jim Starlin and introduced into Marvel comic books in "The Invincible Iron Man #55" in 1973, is one of the most powerful and complex antagonists in the Marvel universe. Known as the Mad Titan, Thanos is a being from Titan, a moon of Saturn, and is one of the most feared characters in the entire cosmos due to his immense strength, intelligence and relentless ambition.
Dominated by his obsession with death and destruction, Thanos is motivated by his love for the personification of Death, whom he seeks to impress through acts of mass genocide. He is best known for his search for the Infinity Stones, cosmic gems that grant their bearer control over various aspects of the universe: Time, Space, Mind, Soul, Reality and Power. With these gems inserted into his Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos becomes practically omnipotent, capable of performing feats such as the snap of his fingers that wiped out half of life in the universe in the event known as "The Snap".
Thanos is characterized by his strategic intelligence, his almost invincible physical strength and his nihilistic philosophy. He sees himself not as a megalomaniac villain, but as someone who makes difficult choices for the "greater good", aiming to create a universal balance by drastically reducing the population. This distorted view, which he believes to be an act of mercy, puts him in direct conflict with the Avengers and many other heroes of the Marvel Universe.
Thanos was memorably adapted for film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where his history and motivations are explored in films such as "Guardians of the Galaxy", "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame". In these films, his menacing presence and the complexity of his character have established him as one of modern cinema's most iconic and enduring villains.
